BMW . How to Eliminate Musty Odor in Automobile Ventilation SystemAs cars age, problems with foreign and unpleasant odors can become a problem. Most often the more offensive odors are the result or liquids being spilled or otherwise entering the automobile where these are allowed to remain until mold and mildew forms, creating an unpleasant scent. While water spills or rain entering through open windows are obvious mildew may also form and create problems in a less conspicuous place and that is in the automobile's air ventilation system. This water accumulation is most often the result of condensation which occurs when cool, air conditioned air passes through the ventilation system on hot, humid days. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 1 spray bottle of liquid Lysol disinfectant 1 Shop vacuum (or equivalent) 1 soft, clean ragDetermine Whether the Problem is in the Air Ventilation System Step by Step : 1 Start the car engine and with the windows closed. Set the car ventilation system on "vent' with the air circulation from inside the car. Set fan speed on high. 2 If there is mildew accumulation in the internal ventilation duct system you will immediately sense a strong, unpleasant, vinegar-like odor. 3 If there is no odor, switch circulation from inside the car to outside, leaving the fan on the high setting. Check for vinegar-like odor. If there is no odor the problem is not in the ventilation system. 4 If either of the above steps results in a strong acetic smell resembling vinegar there is a problem with mildew or mold in the ventilation system. Proceed to section 2. Clean Ventilation System Step by Step : 1Fresh air intake portal Locate the fresh air intake portals on your car. These are most often found at the bottom of the windscreen and just above the hood. 2 Start the engine and the set air ventilation system on high fan speed. Set circulation control to draw air from the outside. This outside air setting is very important. 3 With the engine running and the above settings on the air ventilation system selected, generously spray Lysol disinfectant into the fresh air intake portals on both sides of the windscreen. Pump the spray 10 to 12 times on each side. 4 Inside the car you will smell the scent of the disinfectant working its way through the system and neutralizing the mildew. 5inside air vents Inside of the automobile, place the shop vacuum nozzle against the air vents on both sides and in the middle of the car dashboard panel. Use the vacuum to assist in drawing disinfectant through the entire system. 6Inside air vents Repeat step five on all inside vents. 7 Allow system to run and circulate disinfectant for 10 to 12 minutes. If acetic odor persists repeat the process by spraying additional disinfectant. 8 After 10 to 12 minutes cut off the air ventilation system and stop the engine. From inside the car, spray disinfectant into each inside the air vent. Wipe the excess with clean rag. Tips & Warnings For heavier accumulations of mildew or mold, you may have to repeat disinfectant application until odor is neutralized. In hot, humid areas of the country this process may be required periodically as mildew may return as new condensation occurs.
BMW . How to Get Rid of Car OdorsMysterious and unpleasant odors are never welcome, and they somehow become even more offensive in tight quarters. One place you don't want an odor is in your car. With the windows rolled up, a car makes a breeding ground for unpleasant odors, intensified by warm weather. Worse yet, the odors seem almost impossible to subdue. Fortunately, if you know a few simple tips, you can banish these odors and have a great smelling car. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Baking soda Vacuum Steam cleaner Odor eliminating spray Garbage bagsCleaning out Your Car Step by Step : 1 Roll down your windows. While you are cleaning out your car, leave the windows open. Airing the car out will make cleaning it much easier on your nose. 2 Take your garbage bag and clean out your car. Discard any and all paper, leftover food, clothing and any other items that do not belong in your car. These things can harbor bad odors from sweat and decaying food. Clean out the trunk, glove box and console, ashtray, and don't forget the side pockets of your doors. 3 Vacuum out the car. This includes seats, dash and air vents, floors, crevices and under the seats. Make sure get into the glove box, ashtray and console as well, you never know what little crumbs or bits might be causing the odors. 4 Steam clean the upholstery. If you have a steam cleaner with an arm, this should be relatively easy. If you don't, you can stop by your local self service carwash. Many have stations you can rent time from to get your steam cleaning out of the way. Make sure you get the fronts, backs and sides of all the seats, and wash your mats and carpets as well. Once this is done, let the fabrics dry thoroughly. For non-cloth interiors, use appropriate cleaning solutions. Steam cleaning is not an option for non-cloth interiors. 5 Wipe down all the hard surfaces of your car. Dash board, steering wheel, pedals, air vents and consoles are frequent points of contact, and are often much more dirty than you realize. Additional Odor Control Step by Step : 1 Spray all the cloth or fabric surfaces in your car with an odor eliminating spray. Spray lightly and cover the areas without saturating the fabric. 2 Leave your windows cracked or down as much as possible. Fresh air will do wonders for odors. Be careful of incliment weather and safety precautions should you leave your windows down and your vehicle unattended. 3 Pour baking soda into the ashtray or change container in your car. Baking soda absorbs unplesant odors left in the car. Change the baking soda every month or so. 4 If the odors are persistent, sprinkle baking soda onto the upholstery, and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Vacuum it up. Repeat if necessary. Ultimately, you're going to have to check out what's available and make up your own mind. However, based on the current situation, unless you do a lot of driving in parts of the world where gasoline is scarce and diesel fuel is plentiful, I'd stick to gasoline or consider one of the alternatively powered vehicles described later in this chapter. 342

Check the owner's manual and talk to diesel mechanics to be sure that the oil is easy to change, because you're going to have to change it quite often. Also make sure that the oil, air, and fuel filters are easy to reach and change, and that you can bleed and prime the fuel system easily. Before you buy the vehicle, make the dealer show you where all these items are located and what you must do to maintain them. What makes it yo The basic difference between a diesel engine and a gasoline engine is that in a diesel engine, the fuel is not ignited by an outside power source like a spark plug, nor is it mixed with air in a carburetor. Instead, the fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber through a fuel injector nozzle, just when the air in the chamber has been placed under such great pressure that it's hot enough to ignite the fuel spontaneously. (You can find more information about diesel fuel later in this chapter.) Most conventional engines have compression ratios of around 8:1, which means that the volume of each cylinder is eight times larger with the piston at the bottom of the cylinder than with the piston at the top of the cylinder. Diesel engines may employ compression ratios of above 20:1. Because of this fact, and the fact that the compressed air can reach very high temperatures, diesel engines must be built for greater strength and endurance. (See Figure 7-1.) BMW . When you have the hood down on your 1999 BMW 328 convertible and lock the car with the remote the hood starts to go up?
Yugo GV. * Because diesel fuel is less volatile than gasoline and is easier to start if the combustion chamber is preheated, manufacturers have installed little glow plugs, which work off the battery, to prewarm the air in the cylinders when you first start the car. They have also designed a variety of heaters to help get things going in extremely cold weather. (See "Getting started on a frosty morning" later in this chapter.) Why do some headlight lenses have bumps or sharp points that stick out?
They mainly do it because it looks better to some people and may keep the light straight * Figure 7-1: Governor A diesel engine. Fuel injection pump Here's a step-by-step view of what happens when you start up a diesel-powered vehicle. The details may vary from one car to another, but the action remains pretty much the same. (It might be fun to compare this description with the short overview of how conventional engines work in Chapter 4.) 1. When you first turn the key in the ignition, you're asked to wait until the engine builds up enough heat in the cylinders for satisfactory starting. (Most vehicles have a little light that says, "Wait," but a sultry computer voice may do the same job on some vehicles.) When you turn the key, the glow plugs kick in and begin to warm up the air in the cylinders. (See Figure 7-2.) Usually, you don't have to wait long — probably no more than half a minute in moderate weather. Developments in glow plugs have dramatically reduced starting time. 136 BMW . When you see this light, you step on the accelerator and turn the ignition key to "Start." 3. Fuel pumps deliver the fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. On its way, the fuel passes through a couple of fuel filters (see Figure 7-3) that clean it before it can get to — and clog up — the fuel injector nozzles (see Figure 7-4). Proper maintenance of these filters is especially important in diesels, because fuel contamination can clog up the tiny holes in the injector nozzles. 4. BMW . Why is idling speed increased on my 1996 2.2 vauhall arena van?
An increased idling speed can be caused by a large number of components of the engine. Have you recently given it maintenance? If... * Part II: What Makes It Go?.
